Oban The busy tourist centre of Oban is built round the bay of the same name and is backed by a ring of low hills. Much of the town's activity is centred around the harbour, where fishing vessels, ferries, excursion steamers and pleasure yachts find refuge in this safe haven protected by the island of Kerrera.

The outstanding landmark is McCaig's tower, high on the hill, built in the style of the Colosseum. The project was initiated by an Oban banker to relieve unemployment and act as a family memorial.

Oban produces its own malt whisky, and distillery tours are available on most days with a chance to taste the "water of life".

Excursions As the Gateway to the Isles, Oban offers a great many excursions. A short ferry trip will bring you to the Isle of Mull, home to a great range of wildlife and one of the best places in Europe to spot the rare Golden Eagle. Organised whale watching trips where Minke, Dolphins and other marine life are seen can be taken from the island. West along the coast sits Mull's picturesque capital Tobermory with its gaily-painted buildings around a peaceful bay.
Back in Oban there is easy access to the other scattered islands of the Inner Hebrides, the islands of Coll, Tiree, Lismore and Kerrera. These are low lying islands with beaches of golden sands where on a good day you can find great spots for a picnic.

Kerrera is only minutes offshore and a delightful crossing, it has a really remote feel - hardly any cars, few buildings, and you can walk right over the top to find Gylen Castle, which looks out over the wild Atlantic.

A longer ferry trip takes you to Barra and South Uist where you can really get away from it all amongst stunning scenery and deserted beaches.

My favourite area is Loch Etive, with stunning views out to the Connel Bridge with the Falls of Lora and, towards the east, mind-blowing views towards Ben Cruachan.
Loch Etive
photos Lots of wildlife to see here too; from golden eagles and lots of buzzards and heron to seals and the occasional otter if you are really patient and in luck.
